For thousands of years, human societies have been naming natural phenomena and their relations, generating a system of words, which acts as a collective conscience of our environment. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs… compose a model of reality that we constantly adapt and share from generation to generation. Language gives meaning to our collective existence. We have learned to store our thoughts in inert matter - by writing - and later to transfer aspects of our cognition to machines. Today, large language models (LLM) train on this heritage. AI search engines and generative chatbots lead us through our collective memory. But where? What are we speaking with when we talk to machines? And what happens when automata cease to be mere models of our answers about nature, but try to predict our very questions?
