This course will propose a critical examination of the concepts of VR, AR and Mixed Reality, from the point of view of geography and philosophy.

After a brief overview of early HCI design ranging from the East German Z1013, Terry Winograd's SHRDLU, and early arcade stattion, contemporary examples will be drawn from sources such as Forensic Architecture or the therapeutic gameplay by Lucie Daniel-Watanabe. Theoretical sources will include texts by Peter Sloterdijk and Michel Foucault, Eratosthene's maps and the Heideggerian concept of Enframing (Gestell)... Last but not least, we'll discuss the psychogeographies of videogames like Manifold Garden, Hellblade or The Last Guardian and their mediation of the concept of nature; as well as the role of psychoanlytical concepts and Western and Eastern cosmolgies in the the design of many "souslike" games. With the aim of reflecting on the possibilities and limits of such concepts in the design of a meaningful player experience at the unconsciuous level.
